20" x 16" Oil on canvas
SOLD $1,200
This is the studio piece from a plein (open) air painting I did in Glacier National Park on the Going to the Sun road. It was the first plein air piece I was really happy with and I was encouraged to pursue interesting water scenes--the oil medium does a great job of conveying movement and splashing. This river courses through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and I am always mesmerised by the purple and red rock of the region contrasting with icy teal water. I primarily used a palette knife for the rocks, because it forms good rock shapes and it's fun to partially mix some different colors and smear them on in one confident stroke and see what happens.

I'm fortunate to have a view of Big Mountain in Whitefish out of my studio window, as long as the birch trees obscuring it have no leaves. One late afternoon toward the end of a long, snowy winter the skies were clear and the sun was hitting it just right. I had to work quickly because the photo I took really did it no justice. My favorite paintings, like John Singer Sargent's and Winslow Homer's, capture and reproduce an atmosphere and light quality better than anything else--maybe even better than our eyes.
27" x 11" Dye on silk
$1,200
Seeing these bright yellow aspens on my daily walk is always a treat, but they really popped against a dramatic background of rain clouds against a bright blue sky. The bark looks white in bright sun but upon closer inspection there are a lot of pale pinks and oranges and reflected light in the shadow side.

One morning in late fall I was driving to the airport much earlier than I usually wake up, and caught a gorgeous sunrise over the Swan Mountain Range, tinging the clouds an unreal shade of rich warm pink. I think I was flying out to see friends and the promise of a beautiful day was a perfect complement to my excited anticipation of travel and reunion. I took a photo to remember it and tried to take a mental snapshot of the way the dense, low mist clung to the bare field and the unbelievable colors in the sky and dramatic silhouette of the barn.
9" x 12" Oil painting

My mom Nancy Cawdrey and I went along with a group of painters on a Red Bus ride through Glacier National Park, organized by the fantastic Hockaday Museum of Kalispell, MT. By the time we had made it to the Two Medicine Lake campground which looks at the majestic peak of Sinopah Mountain, we only had an hour or so there so I tried to make quick color notes of the scene in front of me in this plein air piece. The hardest challenge was accurately representing the reflection of the pink and purple mountain in the green, breeze-ruffled water, with that crystal clear GNP water revealing multicolored rocks underneath. I would like to try this again at a different time of day.
